- report from Rick and Lucky Lucy,
January, 2008
Mac, you might want to post this on the web site for
Grand, Tunica.
The transportation continues to be a big problem at the Grand, Tunica, RV
park. The shuttle bus is supposed to run every hour at the top of the hour.
We wanted to go to the casino at 10:00 the first morning but the driver
decided to skip that run altogether. I called our casino host for some help
and she got in touch with the Transportation manager. They dispatched a bus
to pick us up and Leroy, the Tran mgr, met us at the door. He assured us
this would never happen again and gave me his card with cell phone
number. I was to call him if there was a problem.
We wanted to returned to the campground at 4:00 PM but the
bus was 15 minutes late -- within tolerable limits (barely). We attempted to
return to the casino at 6:00 PM for
dinner. The shuttle bus showed up on time but only ran about half the rows
in the park and, of course, she skipped ours. It was dark and raining even
so I ran out waving my arms and swearing as she departed the park. I called
Leroy and he was livid. A few minutes later the shuttle came back followed
closely by the shift manager in her car (who also gave us her card and cell
phone number). But who needs this hassle and resulting high blood pressure,
we left and went to the Hollywood where we can walk to the casino.
Unless you have a toad and can provide your own
transportation, we would recommend
against staying at this park.
Nice campground, widely spaced sites but away from
everything. They have a nice clubhouse with swimming pool -- not a big
factor this time of year. Wi-fi for $12 per day, free coffee in clubhouse.
However, there are no sites close to the clubhouse/shower/ laundry facility.
This is a problem for anyone with limited mobility. Of course the big
negative factor with this campground is the transportation problem getting
to the casino. For this reason we will not stay there again.
The Grand casino is presently undergoing a major renovation. They
will completely redo the entire casino and rename it Harrah's. The Grand
name will be dropped altogether. Of significant interest, Paula Dean, the TV
cook show chef from Savannah, will endorse the new buffet and add some of
her signature dishes. We are optimistic this move will improve the buffet --
it certainly needs improvement.

Now owned by Harrah's we find it convenient to
use Total Reward comp points at the Grand (earned at other Harrah's casinos)
to pay for food and camping. They have a decent RV park at reasonable
prices, full hook-up about $18. However, we were disappointed to find on our
last trip they now charge for Wi-Fi access.
The Grand is the largest casino and resort in
Tunica (probably all Mississippi) and is strung out in several buildings
over many acres. They also have a golf course, trap range, and other
non-gambling amusements. Everything is too far from the casino to walk,
including the RV park, so we must depend on shuttle buses. They only run
once an hour through the RV park but will come between runs if they are
called.
We have never dry camped at the Grand but I have
observed motor homes and campers parked in the oversize vehicle lot near the
casino.
The buffet is just so-so but seems to have
improved somewhat since Harrah's took over. The Diamond lounge is excellent
and the casual cafe is pretty good. All are on the second floor of the
casino.
There are still a few full pay video poker
machines and we hit them pretty hard on our last visit.

October 2006
We just came back from a weekend RV/gambling trip to Tunica, Mississippi
and thought we would share our experience. This was our first time to
Tunica. I had read the reviews and knew there were essentially 3 RV parks
there (Grand, Hollywood and Sam's Town). So, I took out my dart and threw
it. It landed at the Grand. Reservations were made and off we went.
The Grand casino RV park is a very nice facility. It is secluded and
gated. All sites are paved, some have trees. Each site has a picnic table.
The grounds were very well kept. There is a lodge with internet (dial-up),
showers and a laundry facility. A nice swimming pool is also there. I
noticed a playground area, a basketball court, shuffleboard and volleyball
courts. We were only there for the weekend at a charge of $22/nite. All
sites have full hook-ups and are spacious. There are both pull-trough and
back in sites. Of the three, I think it is probably the most secluded and
quiet.
If you are towing a vehicle to drive, then that is where I would probably
stay again. HOWEVER, we went in our motorhome knowing that there is
shuttle service for $1 to all casinos. When we checked in, the gal at the
desk said that there was a shuttle that went around the campground on the
hour, every hour, 24 hrs. per day. Just put your little red flag up, and
the driver will stop. Friday night we were picked up and shuttled to the
casino, and back without problems. Saturday morning however...the shuttle
driver raced around about half of the campground (not sure how she could
have seen any of those little flags) and back out the gate. Of course, the
half that she raced through did not include ours. So, we waited for about
an hour, here came the shuttle...same racing about and excluding us
again!!! Think how much money they casinos were losing by keeping us at
the campground!!!! We walked over to the lodge, and told the clerk our
experience. She immediately called for a bus to pick us up. Back came the
bus...zoom, right into the RV park again, zoomed around and came back
(empty, imagine that) and picked us up. We came back to the campground in
the afternoon and told the driver what time we wanted to be picked up and
we were.
Bottom line, either have your own transportation, or go to the lodge and
have them call for pickup. The casino is not within walking distance of
the campground.
While out and about we did go past the Sam's
Town RV park. It is paved, but right next to the highway. I did see some
picnic tables there. Hollywood's RV park is right behind their casino. We
walked over to it. Some pull throughs and some back-ins. Sites are more
crowded than Grand. But, you can walk over to the casinos...no waiting for
a shuttle. We will probably stay at Hollywood next time. We enjoyed the
gaming atmosphere at the Hollywood more than the Grand. But, if you are
going for a longer period of time, want some privacy and have a vehicle,
the Grand would be a great place to stay.
- report from reader A. Van, January 2006 Nice open park with pull thrus.
Some back in sites have instant phones. Shuttle service. No groceries
or other “city” services. Hollywood and Sam's Town casinos also have
RV park. Hollywood appears comparable to Grand Casino; Sam's Town is
paved but kind of crowded.
