Report, September 14, 2007
Last
night we were passing through Iowa, and looking for somewhere to get a bite
to eat and catch some sleep. I noticed the Prairie Meadows Casino was
convenient. I gave them a call and asked if they had a place that I
could park an RV. They said sure, park with the trucks, it's a big
parking lot and you can't miss it.
I
checked vpFREE before we arrived, and saw they have 9/6 JOB and 9/7 DB.
Sounds good. I looked at their web site and they have a poker room too --
excellent!
When
we arrived we saw about a dozen 18-wheelers there already, and looked like
space for about 40 total. It's a good level concrete parking area, and
very clean. Shuttles run to the casino every 5 minutes, and it's not
too far to walk either if you want a little exercise. Chris saw
a small red sign at one end of the parking lot that said "No Overnight
Camping"... uh-oh. When the shuttle picked us up I asked him if they
get many RV's staying in the truck lot and he said yeah, all the time.
So it sounds like the policy isn't enforced unless there's a problem, and we
had no intention of being a problem.
So
Chris hit the video poker and I hit the live poker. I found a cash
no-limit game $1/$2 with a $300 buy-in. Loose pre-flop and typical mix
of styles with a few locals and a few travelers.
About
8:30 we wanted to eat. They have a steak house and a buffet. We
picked the buffet, and it was all right. Good variety, but some food
wasn't kept hot. Nice selection of desserts. Stir fry and pasta
to order (which I missed but Chris noticed).
Chris
returned to the machines after dinner and I went home. She played
another couple of hours and came home just as I was heading to bed. We
got a good night's sleep and back on the road this morning.

Another new casino in Iowa is Catfish Bend in
Burlington. The casino opened in May or June and is next to Fun City. I had
talked to someone who said that they allow overnight RV parking, but we
haven't had the chance to visit it ourselves to be sure.

We stayed here
for several nights but only played in the casino for a few hours so I
can't report on that.
To get to the RV parking make a right after turning into the casino
entrance and follow the signs. This takes you to a large parking area with
easy access to the riverboat. No specific area marked for RVs.
There's a paved bike trail on the levee behind the parking lot and it's an
easy walk to Harrah's riverboat. (didn't check out this casino)
There are many other attractions besides the casinos in Council Bluffs
which makes it a very interesting area to visit. Photo is taken from
the levee.

Overnight
Parking is OK (but not for MDT or HDT -- especially if you don't have the
5th wheel in tow -- see report below from Joanne)
- from reader Joanne A. July 2007
My husband and I recently were camping in
the Council Bluffs area and decided to visit Harrah's Horseshoe Casino in
Council Bluffs.
We had dropped our 5th wheel at a local
campground and were only in our Freightliner Sport Chassis which is a medium
duty truck. The truck only has six tires instead of the usual ten that a
full size Freightliner has. We arrived on July 10th (a Tuesday) and parked
at the very edge of the parking lot even though there were very few cars
there. No sooner did we go into the casino then we were paged to the
Security Department.
It seems that they do not allow semi's in the
parking lot. We tried explaining that our truck is a RV hauler only and is
considered a medium duty truck that can fit between the parking lines. We
spoke to the Supervisor in Security and she informed us that we could not
park in the parking lot and we would have to go down the road a half mile
and park at the truck stop. There were several motor homes, dually pick up
trucks and trucks with Haulmark trailers in the parking lot. We tried
explaining that they are all larger than our truck but I think because it
says Freightliner she considered us a semi. We stated that we would go to
the Ameristar where we were welcomed.
I feel that Harrah's Horseshoe was being
prejudiced against large RV owners and we will refuse to go to any Harrah's
in the future.
- from reader Karen B, September
2006.
There are two
Harrah's in Council Bluff. This one is associated with a greyhound race
track and has recently been remodeled. It's located in a very industrial
area ( right across from a Tyson chicken plant ) but it spite of this the
parking area is fairly quiet.
The RV parking isn't marked. If you come in the front entrance make a left
at the parking garage and continue to the parking lot beside the garage.
Most of the rvers park along the chain-link fence. The photograph was
taken on a weekday in September so it's pretty empty but it's a large
enough area to accommodate many RVs. We spent several days there and
noticed that the security truck included this area in his rounds.
One unusual thing about this casino is that alcoholic drinks are not
complementary to players until they have reached the Diamond level on
their cards. It's the same Total Rewards card that other Harrah and
affiliated casinos use though so you may qualify.

Newly
built Casino which is right off the freeway (I-35. exit 214) Very near to
the Minnesota border line. Ample parking for RV's because there is an actual
REST STOP across from the casino parking lot. However, we parked our RV in
the casino parking lot along the fence. We had no problems parking there.
There is NO RV park there. We only stayed a few hours.
There
is a hotel (Country Suites) adjacent to the Casino. The casino was mid-size
and has over 900 slots. Very nice, newer slots. We were just passing
through, but we would visit there again. Open Sunday - Thursday 8AM - 3AM.
Fridays & Saturdays 24 hours.

RV Park with full hookups
- Report
from Dave R., July 2007
Terrible's Lake Side Casino is in
Osceola, Iowa. There is an exit off of I-35 that will take you right to it.
We have not stayed at their RV Park but have driven through it. The sides
are full hook ups and pretty roomy with small trees. The cost is $20 per
night and you get $10 worth or slot tokens back making it $10 per night. I
don’t know the limit of nights. It is a very clean set up.
The casino is pretty nice and they have a very good
buffet. The other items on their menu are also above average. There is a
hotel attached to the casino and we have stayed there in the past. I was
very adequate for our needs.
The problem with the RV Park is on the weekends you have
to get there early in order to get a spot. It fills out before evening. The
lady told me it would be a good idea to get there around 1:00 on a Friday to
get it. They do NOT take reservations.
If you can get a spot it would be a very nice spot to
spend the night if you are going north or south on I-35.

occasions and parked in the regular lot. Security included us in their
