report from Sharon W., June 2009
I
just received confirmation that the casino will reopen on June 25 and the
campground will open back up the same day. This is one of our favorite
places to camp because it is so quiet. No one under 21 is allowed in the
campgrounds. I can walk up to the casino and my husband can stay at the
camper and watch TV if he wants. You can get decent Chicago reception most
of the time although the DTV may change that. (They don't have cable.) There
are nice level concrete pads. I'm really curious to see the new casino.
Casino Camper Update, June 2009
An
annonymous user of our website emailed me with the following:
"Concerning the
Empress Casino: they had a very bad fire and are in the process of
rebuilding with reported hopes of opening up again in late June 2009. I
called and found out their RV Park will be closed until the casino reopens.
Please be sure you call ahead to confirm. There are not a lot of other
campgrounds in the area and it can get sticky getting another campsite,
especially on weekends."
Casino Camper Report, October, 2008
We
visited the Empress Casino and stayed two nights in the RV park. The
RV park has large spaces with plenty of room for your awning and lawn
furniture. There's also lots of grass and open space, and most spots
have one or more trees, but it's still a "satellite friendly" park.
Pads are concrete, and although some are a little short there are long spots
that will accommodate the largest, longest rigs. Hookups are 50/30 amp
and water, with a dump station that's open for travelers as well.
Note
that there's no RV park office, you check in at the hotel desk. The staff
was very friendly, and the front desk took good care of us. I
was quite ill when we arrived and they checked me in by phone so I wouldn't
have to come up to the hotel.
The
location is convenient, very close to Joliet and not too far for a day-trip
into Chicago. However, even this close in to the city the park is a natural setting with wildlife.
My wife saw several deer grazing both mornings when she went out for her
morning smoke!
The
casino is undergoing a major upgrade over the next 12 months, and I hope to
visit again next fall and stay longer, using this for a local base camp to
visit Chicago, etc.
